Get ready, skateboard and pop-culture fans—the legendary Santa Cruz Skateboards has teamed up with the monster king himself, Godzilla, to deliver a groundbreaking, larger-than-life skateboard collection. This collaboration goes beyond just graphics, bringing epic design elements and craftsmanship that truly honor the iconic Godzilla universe.
The project kicked off with a vision to merge Santa Cruz’s classic skate culture with the colossal influence of Godzilla. Renowned artist Thomas Fernández, known for his deep knowledge of Godzilla lore, especially the classic Toho films and collectibles, collaborated with Santa Cruz Art Director Tyler Emanuel. Together, they envisioned a design that would bring out the monstrous feel of Godzilla, balancing authenticity with artistic innovation. The goal? To create a board that not only represents the power of Godzilla but also celebrates the artistry of Santa Cruz’s skateboarding heritage.
One of the defining aspects of this collaboration is the involvement of multiple artists, each bringing their own style to the table. By having diverse talent, each design exudes a unique interpretation of Godzilla’s legacy. Tyler Emanuel emphasised that this approach gave the project a fresh variety that wouldn’t have been possible with a single artist. Whether it’s Thomas Fernández’s intimate knowledge of Godzilla’s character, Luke Preece’s digital fire pit featuring the infamous Shin Godzilla, or Makoto Yamaki’s authentic Japanese Kadokawa lettering, each detail pays homage to the beloved kaiju in distinct ways.
In true Godzilla fashion, the Santa Cruz team didn’t just stop at stunning graphics. They developed the largest skateboard shape they’ve ever produced, with jagged, angular lines that echo Godzilla’s iconic scales and spikes. This massive board commands attention—both as a collector’s piece and as a functional deck for riders who want to embrace the power of Godzilla.
The design journey wasn’t short, either. The artwork took over 100 hours to complete, with up to 70 hours dedicated solely to inking. Each board’s graphic was meticulously created, from the initial thumbnail sketches to the inking process, using traditional tools like brushes, old-school dip nibs, and technical pens. This careful attention to detail ensures that every line embodies the Santa Cruz artistic lineage.
From the monstrous Godzilla graphics to the dynamic Roskopp 5—a board design evolved from the iconic “Target” design—the visuals in this collection are as detailed and powerful as the monsters they depict. The collection includes creative nods to fan-favorite elements, like Mecha Godzilla and the “screaming hand” integration, which Pitchgrim carefully crafted, merging familiar imagery with a fresh, exciting take.
The Natas Panther graphic takes a different approach, combining the aggressive stance of the Natas panther with Godzilla’s likeness—a challenge for the artists to merge these contrasting elements seamlessly. The result is an awe-inspiring visual that stays true to both Godzilla’s menacing appeal and the Natas Panther’s unique character.
Seeing these designs in person takes the experience to a whole new level. Enhanced details and foil treatments make the graphics pop, creating a visual experience that far surpasses digital mockups. For fans of both skate culture and the Godzilla universe, this collection is a dream come true—a high-quality, artistically rich tribute to both worlds.
With Santa Cruz and Godzilla joining forces, this collaboration stands as one of the most exciting skateboard releases in recent years. Whether you’re an avid skater or a collector, the Santa Cruz x Godzilla boards are a must-have piece of skateboarding history.
